Of course cost and time are always a big concern for Boys & Girls Clubs. Building projects are a huge undertaking for most organizations. But design-build is most appropriate only when there is an unusual cost or time constraint. The traditional route of hiring an architect, bidding the project and then hiring a contractor usually best suits the needs of Clubs. It allows them to plan, fundraise, shop for the best price, and have professional assistance through construction.

The Salem organization was blessed with a dedicated and experienced building committee. Many of them had been involved in building projects in the past and one of the members was a CEO of a large construction company. Because they were not contracting with an architect for construction management the committee met weekly with the design-build firm during the nine-month construction period. Strong local relationships allowed them to further control costs with over $250,000 of in-kind support.

This is a great example of how one organization rolled up their sleeves, stayed very involved, and were able to realize a big dream in a short period of time. The success of their hard work is evident with a new Clubhouse that the whole community is proud of. The great colors really make the interior fun. The controlled entry and visibility of all the spaces helps to make it a safe place for members. Their programs can now meet the needs of youth in the 21st Century by having dedicated space for technology, education, theater, fine arts, fitness and cooking classes. They have created “a positive place for kids.”
