The board of the Salem Boys & Girls Club in New Hampshire was looking to update and repair their Clubhouse. Other community leaders were also looking for a way to address the growing need of a dedicated space for teens. The two groups joined forces and the result was a $3,200,000 major renovation and construction project at the existing Boys & Girls Club location.

Ultimately it was decided that only the pool and gymnasium were worth salvaging from their existing structure. But that left them in a dilemma because the Club was already perfectly situated to serve the youth in their community. The site is directly across the street from the library and high school and just one block away from the middle school. They certainly did not want to give up such a prime location. Luckily the Club had a limited time offer to maintain their operations at a nearby college through the entire construction period. This made time of the essence.

After weighing all their options the building committee chose to hire a design-build firm rather than hiring a separate architect and contractor for this project. Design-build allowed the Salem organization to meet a tight schedule and contract with a single entity to provide both design and construction services. Design-build is a good choice when a Club has an experienced committee and cost or time is the prime concern.
